Treasury Legal Advisor Backs Fuel Price Cut Amid Election Concerns

The Israeli Treasury's legal advisor has recommended approving a proposal by Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich to reduce fuel prices by half a shekel, despite opposition from professional staff within the ministry who fear it is an election ploy. The recommendation was sent to the Attorney General.

In a legal opinion, the advisor acknowledged that the move contradicts the Treasury's professional echelon and raises concerns about it being motivated by the upcoming elections. However, the opinion noted that a similar step was taken in 2022 in Israel and other countries. Additionally, the need to alleviate the cost of living was cited as a factor.

Given these points, the legal advisor concluded that there is no legal impediment to approving the measure. The proposal aims to lower the tax on fuel, a move intended to provide economic relief to the public.
