IDF Kills Hamas Commander Holding Israeli Hostages in Gaza Tunnel

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced on Thursday that they killed Ismail Muhammad Ibrahim Barim, a commander in Hamas's military wing, in an airstrike near Khan Younis in southern Gaza. Barim was reportedly holding Israeli hostages Idan Alexander, Matan Tsangoker, and Avera Mengistu captive in a tunnel in the southern Gaza Strip. The IDF stated that Barim had recently been involved in planning terrorist attacks against Israeli soldiers and civilians and was working to rebuild Hamas's operational capabilities, violating the ceasefire agreement.

The strike aimed to neutralize the threat Barim posed, with IDF Southern Command forces deployed in the area according to the ceasefire terms. The military emphasized its commitment to eliminating any immediate threats. Matan Tsangoker's mother, Einav Tsangoker, expressed gratitude to the IDF and security forces for their efforts in killing the militant who held her son and other hostages.

Earlier on Thursday, Defense Minister Israel Katz held a security briefing with top military officials, including Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir. Katz declared that the ultimatum issued following balloon and kite attacks from Gaza toward southern Israeli communities had expired. He warned that any future launches would be treated as acts of terrorism and met with strong responses targeting those responsible and the launch sites.

Katz also stated that, under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's instructions, the IDF would use all necessary means against launch points, potentially including evacuating civilian areas used for attacks to enable military operations. He stressed that Israel would not allow Hamas or any other group to revert to pre-October 7 tactics of threatening southern communities and vowed that violators would face severe consequences.
