Israeli Forces Kill Hamas Commander Who Held Israeli and American Hostages in Gaza

Israeli military forces eliminated Ismail Muhammad Ibrahim Barim, a senior Hamas commander, in Khan Yunis on Wednesday. Barim was responsible for holding Israeli and American hostages, including Idan Alexander, Matan Zangoker, and Avra Mangisto, captive in Gaza. The targeted strike aimed to neutralize the immediate threat posed by Barim, who was actively working to restore Hamas's terrorist infrastructure and orchestrate attacks against Israeli soldiers, violating the ceasefire agreement.

Barim's role extended beyond hostage captivity; he was involved in planning terror operations against Israeli forces and civilians. The Israeli Southern Command confirmed that troops remain deployed in the area according to the ceasefire terms and will continue to act decisively against any emerging threats.

Avra Mangisto, who was held captive by Hamas for over a decade after entering Gaza in 2014, was released in a historic exchange in February 2025. He had been held in the same tunnel in southern Gaza alongside Idan Alexander, an American-Israeli soldier kidnapped on October 7, and Matan Zangoker, abducted from his home in Nir Oz. These three hostages were under Barim's supervision. Following the release of Mangisto and Alexander in May 2025, valuable intelligence and confirmation of Matan Zangoker's continued captivity were obtained, fueling ongoing family efforts that culminated in Zangoker's return in October 2025.
