Israeli Teen Dies After Falling During Family Caving Trip at Keshet Cave

New details have emerged about the tragic death of 16-year-old Yehonatan Efraim Klimian, who fell from a great height while rappelling at Keshet Cave during a family outing on August 9, 2026. Yehonatan, a yeshiva student and Bnei Akiva youth movement guide, was helping his sister descend safely when he noticed a problem with the rope. After climbing back up to fix the issue, he began descending again but suffered a severe fall under unclear circumstances, possibly due to a rope failure.

The Klimian family, who enjoy hiking and adventure activities together, had completed formal rappelling training before the trip. Yehonatan’s parents, who remained at the top of the cliff, quickly realized the accident had occurred and alerted relatives to recite Psalms. Emergency medical teams from Magen David Adom (MDA) rappelled down to reach Yehonatan, finding him unconscious and without vital signs. Despite advanced resuscitation efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

MDA paramedics Mimon Gabay and Ligel Dror described the difficult rescue conditions and the severity of Yehonatan’s injuries. In response to the incident, Orly Silbinger, CEO of the child safety organization Betrem, highlighted the alarming rise in fatal falls among children in Israel, noting that eight children have died from falls so far in 2026, with many more injured. She warned that this year could become one of the deadliest for child accident fatalities in recent memory.

The investigation into the exact cause of the rope failure and fall is ongoing. The tragedy has raised renewed calls for heightened safety awareness during outdoor activities involving children and youth.
