Israeli Teen Dies After Falling During Family Caving Trip at Keshet Cave

New details have emerged about the tragic death of 16-year-old Yehonatan Efraim Klimian, who fell from a great height while rappelling at Keshet Cave in northern Israel. Yehonatan, a yeshiva student and Bnei Akiva youth movement counselor, was on a family hiking trip when the accident occurred on August 9, 2026. The family, experienced in rappelling and having completed courses together, was descending the cave when Yehonatan initially helped his sister down safely. He then began his own descent but noticed a problem with the rope, climbed back up to fix it, and resumed descending. During his second descent, a serious malfunction happened, possibly a rope tear, causing him to fall from a significant height.

Yehonatan’s parents, who remained at the top of the cliff, quickly realized the accident had occurred and alerted relatives while reciting Psalms. Rescue teams from Magen David Adom (MDA) reached the site by rappelling down themselves. Paramedics Mimon Gabay and Ligel Dror reported that Yehonatan was unconscious, without pulse or breathing, and had severe injuries. Despite advanced resuscitation efforts, they declared him dead at the scene.

Orly Silbinger, CEO of the child safety organization Betrem, commented on the incident, highlighting the dangers of falls among children. She noted that eight children have died from falls in Israel so far in 2026, with many more injured, warning that this year could be one of the deadliest for such accidents. The family’s tragedy underscores the risks involved in adventure activities even for experienced participants.
