Teen Dies in Keshat Cave After Helping Sister and Fixing Equipment During Family Hike

New details have emerged about the tragic accident that occurred on Saturday at Keshat Cave, where 16-year-old Yehonatan Ephraim Klimian was fatally injured during a family hike. Yehonatan, a yeshiva student and a guide in the Bnei Akiva youth movement, was participating in the hike with his family, who are experienced hikers and have completed formal rappelling courses. During the descent, Yehonatan first assisted his sister by holding the rope and safely lowering her down. When he began his own descent, he noticed a problem with the equipment and decided to stop, climb back up, and fix it before continuing.

However, during his second descent, a serious malfunction occurred under unclear circumstances, resulting in Yehonatan falling from a significant height. It is currently suspected that the rope may have torn during the rappel, but the exact cause of the fall remains unknown. Yehonatan's parents stayed at the top of the cliff and quickly realized the severity of the accident. They contacted family members, asking them to recite Psalms. For an extended period, there was no communication with the family, until relatives eventually reached Yehonatan's father, who was already at the bottom beside his son.
