Veteran German Center Daniel Theis Signs Two-Year Deal with Maccabi Tel Aviv

Daniel Theis, the experienced German center, officially signed a two-year contract with Maccabi Tel Aviv on Wednesday. Despite interest from several EuroLeague teams, Theis chose to join the Israeli club, earning $2 million per season. Earlier this summer, Theis was close to joining French team Villeurbanne, with club owner Tony Parker confirming near agreement in late June. However, Villeurbanne's recent financial crisis altered the situation, leading Theis to opt for Maccabi Tel Aviv instead.

Maccabi Tel Aviv chairman Shimon Mizrahi described the signing as "very significant," highlighting Theis's experience and defensive contributions. Head coach Oded Katash praised Theis's versatility and winning pedigree, noting his NBA and EuroLeague background, as well as his international success with Germany. Katash emphasized Theis's ability to play multiple positions and bring flexibility to the team.

Theis, 34, who stands 2.06 meters tall, spent several years in the NBA with teams including the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Clippers before becoming a key player for Monaco in the EuroLeague. In the 2024/25 season, he averaged 11.7 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, helping Monaco reach the EuroLeague final. Last season, he maintained solid stats with 9.7 points and 5.0 rebounds over 38 games.

Internationally, Theis has been a standout for the German national team, winning the 2023 World Championship, the 2025 European Championship, and a bronze medal at EuroBasket 2022. In nine games at the recent European Championship, he averaged 10.2 points, 6.4 rebounds, and one block per game. Maccabi Tel Aviv views Theis as a major reinforcement for their frontcourt as they prepare for upcoming competitions.
