Maccabi Tel Aviv Signs Veteran German Center Daniel Theis on Two-Year Deal

Maccabi Tel Aviv has completed the signing of veteran German center Daniel Theis on a two-year contract worth $2.2 million. Theis, 34, who stands 2.06 meters tall, was initially set to join French club Villeurbanne but the team's financial difficulties prevented the deal. This opened the door for Maccabi Tel Aviv to secure the experienced player, who is expected to be the team's leading big man under coach Oded Katash.

Theis brings extensive experience from top-level basketball, including several years in the NBA with the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Clippers, before returning to Europe to play a key role for Monaco. In recent EuroLeague seasons, he has established himself as one of the continent's most reliable centers, averaging 11.7 points and 5.5 rebounds in 2024/25 and 9.7 points with 5.0 rebounds in 2025/26. His physical presence and veteran leadership are seen as valuable assets for Maccabi.

The signing was facilitated by agent Nadav Mor of CAA, who also represents Israeli players Omer Meyer and Ben Sarf. Theis will complete his contract at age 36. The financial troubles at Villeurbanne, which led to a significant budget cut and the departure of key players like Silvan Francisco, allowed Maccabi to capitalize on the opportunity to add Theis to their roster.
