IDF Kills Palestinian Islamic Jihad Commander Involved in Hostage Abuse and Release Ceremonies

The Israel Defense Forces announced on Monday that they killed Mahmoud Fatair, a commander in the Palestinian Islamic Jihad's Central Camps Brigade, during an operation in Deir al-Balah in central Gaza. Fatair was involved in the October 7 attack and played a role in holding Israeli hostage Rom Breslavski, as well as participating in the so-called "release ceremonies" of several hostages. The IDF stated that Fatair recently attempted to orchestrate terror attacks against Israeli forces and civilians, and his elimination was aimed at neutralizing this threat.

Rom Breslavski, who was held captive in Gaza for nearly two years, previously shared with Israeli media the severe torture and humiliations he endured during his captivity. He described brutal physical abuse and psychological torment, including being forced to swallow spit and being doused with dirt and waste instead of water during a supposed shower. Breslavski recounted that the humiliations were the hardest part of his ordeal, surpassing even the physical pain.

The hostages whose release ceremonies Fatair took part in include Amit Shani, Ofir Engel, Moran Stella Yanai, Itai Regev, Liam Or Nasser, Raz Ben Ami, Paibon Ratnin, Gong Sai Lao, Jakapan Sikna, and Charuamtchai Saigkai. The IDF forces in the southern command remain deployed in the area according to existing agreements and will continue operations to eliminate threats.

This operation underscores ongoing Israeli efforts to dismantle terror infrastructures in Gaza and prevent future attacks on Israeli civilians and soldiers.
