Clashes Erupt Between Beitar Jerusalem and Larnaca Fans Ahead of Cyprus Match

Shortly before the scheduled kickoff of the match between AEK Larnaca and Beitar Jerusalem on Thursday evening at 19:30, a physical confrontation broke out between the two sets of fans. One Beitar supporter sustained minor injuries, and two Beitar fans were arrested, while seven individuals from the Cypriot crowd were also detained. Video footage showed fans from both sides throwing stones and chairs, with Larnaca supporters reportedly waiting for Beitar fans and initiating stone-throwing.

Local Cypriot media reported that some Beitar fans caused property damage in Larnaca's streets, prompting police to disperse the crowd with tear gas. The Cypriot outlet Guardian Sport noted that Beitar fans' provocative actions forced the police to increase security measures ahead of the game and warned Larnaca fans to remain cautious. Beitar Jerusalem strongly denied these claims, issuing an official statement clarifying that, following discussions with the Larnaca police commander and UEFA representatives, Beitar fans were not responsible for any street damage. The statement added that tear gas was used solely against AEK Larnaca fans who attempted to confront Beitar supporters.

Additionally, at the Radisson Hotel where Beitar staff and some fans are staying, management circulated a letter to guests addressing inappropriate behavior observed the previous day. The letter expressed pride in hosting the team at a hotel formerly owned by an Israeli and Jerusalemite fan but noted disrespectful graffiti and a strong smell of cannabis smoke in the hotel courtyard. The letter also wished Beitar success in the match and a meaningful fast for Tisha B'Av. By Thursday, the noise and smoke disturbances had ceased.
