Netherlands May Return to Eurovision in 2027 After Boycott

The Netherlands is reportedly considering a return to the Eurovision Song Contest in 2027, potentially reversing a decision by broadcaster AVROTROS to boycott the event. According to Dutch media, the national public broadcasting organization NPO would assume responsibility for the country's participation, allowing the Netherlands to rejoin after a one-year absence. AVROTROS had announced its boycott for the upcoming competition, citing that Eurovision had lost its neutral character due to Israel's involvement in a "wide military conflict." The Dutch broadcaster also stated that changes proposed by the European Broadcasting Union did not adequately address their concerns, leading to the decision to transfer the final say back to NPO.

This potential Dutch return comes as other nations have also taken stances regarding Israel's participation. Ireland, however, has confirmed it will not participate in Eurovision 2027, marking its second consecutive year of absence. Irish broadcaster RTÉ cited Israel's participation and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza as reasons for its decision not to send a representative or broadcast the contest.

Israel's participation in Eurovision has been a point of contention in previous years. During the last European Broadcasting Union assembly in Geneva, a secret vote was held regarding Israel's potential disqualification, but the country remained in the competition. In that same year, Ireland, the Netherlands, Iceland, Slovenia, and Spain boycotted the event.

Eurovision 2027 is scheduled to take place in Burgas, Bulgaria. The semi-finals are set for May 11 and 13, with the grand final on May 15. Bulgaria earned hosting rights after singer Dara won the most recent contest with the song "Benga Ranga," securing the nation's first-ever Eurovision victory.
