Netherlands to Return to Eurovision After Initial Boycott Over Israel's Participation

The Netherlands is reportedly set to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2027, reversing its earlier decision to boycott the event due to Israel's involvement. Dutch media reported that public broadcaster NPO will now oversee the country's participation, following a withdrawal announcement by broadcaster AVROTROS last month. AVROTROS had cited concerns that Eurovision had lost its neutral character because of the participation of a country involved in a significant military conflict, stating that changes proposed by the European Broadcasting Union were insufficient.

This decision comes as Ireland has announced it will boycott Eurovision for the second consecutive year. Irish broadcaster RTÉ confirmed it will not send a representative or broadcast the competition, protesting Israel's participation and citing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Last year, amid growing international pressure, Israel narrowly survived a secret vote to disqualify it during a meeting of the European Broadcasting Union in Geneva. Iceland, Slovenia, and Spain also boycotted the competition alongside Ireland and the Netherlands.

The Eurovision Song Contest 2027 is scheduled to take place in Burgas, Bulgaria. The semi-finals will be held on May 11 and 13, with the grand final on May 15. Bulgaria will host after singer Dara won the most recent contest with the song "Benga Renga," marking the country's first victory.
