Netherlands Reverses Eurovision Boycott, Will Compete in 2027

The Netherlands has announced it will participate in the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest, reversing a decision made just last month to boycott the event due to Israel's participation. The initial boycott was declared by AVROTROS, the public broadcaster previously responsible for the Dutch delegation, which stated Eurovision could no longer be considered neutral while Israel competed during wartime. AVROTROS relinquished responsibility for the Dutch entry.

However, the broader Dutch public broadcasting organization, NPO, sought an extension beyond the September 15 registration deadline from the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) to explore alternative arrangements. This request was granted, and a pathway has now been found for the Netherlands to return to the competition.

Several other Dutch broadcasters, including Omroep MAX, had previously stated they were not interested in taking on the Eurovision project, with MAX citing a lack of suitability. The private company Talpa has reportedly offered to assist NPO if needed.

The selection process for the Dutch representative for 2027 is yet to be determined, as is the mechanism for choosing them, following AVROTROS's withdrawal. The semi-finals of Eurovision 2027 are scheduled for May 11 and 13, with the grand final on May 15. The Netherlands was among five countries, including Ireland, Spain, Iceland, and Slovenia, that did not participate in Eurovision 2026 in protest of Israel's involvement. Unlike the Netherlands, Ireland has confirmed it will not participate or broadcast the 2027 contest.
