Netherlands to Return to Eurovision in 2027 After Israel Boycott
The Netherlands will participate in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2027, reversing its boycott of the 2026 event which was staged in protest against Israel's participation. The Dutch public broadcaster NPO announced on Wednesday that it had decided to rejoin the competition following extensive discussions with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).
This decision comes despite AVROTROS, the broadcaster traditionally responsible for the Dutch entry, having previously stated its intention to continue the boycott through 2027. AVROTROS argued that Eurovision could no longer be considered a neutral event while a country involved in a major conflict, referring to Israel, was allowed to compete.
The NPO, however, has opted for a different path, with NOS now set to manage the Netherlands' participation. "We understand that participation in the Eurovision Song Contest evokes mixed feelings in the Netherlands," acknowledged Jet de Ranitz, chairwoman of the NPO's board. The NPO stated it has urged the EBU to re-center the "unifying character" of Eurovision amidst "geopolitical unrest, war, and polarization."
The NPO also acknowledged the "important measures" taken by the EBU regarding the contest's regulations. Recent changes include a provision to prevent a country facing armed conflict or sensitive geopolitical situations from automatically hosting the contest if they win, and modifications to voting rules following controversies surrounding Israel's results.
The Netherlands becomes the first of the five nations that boycotted Eurovision 2026 over Israel's involvement to announce its return. Spain, Slovenia, and Iceland have yet to finalize their decisions for 2027, while Ireland confirmed last week it would maintain its boycott and not broadcast the competition. Belgium also announced its participation for 2027 on Wednesday, after considering withdrawal, with Flemish broadcaster VRT clarifying this does not constitute "approval or normalization of what is happening in Gaza."
Eurovision 2027 is scheduled to take place from May 11-15 in Burgas, Bulgaria, following Bulgarian singer Dara's victory in Vienna this year. Israel's representative, Noam Bettan, secured second place in the previous contest.
