Netherlands to Participate in Eurovision 2027 After Previous Boycott

The Dutch public broadcaster NPO announced on Wednesday that the Netherlands will participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2027, to be held in Burgas, Bulgaria. This decision follows a period of uncertainty and internal discussions after the Netherlands boycotted the competition last year due to Israel's participation.

According to the Dutch media outlet Brabants Dagblad, "green light" has been given for the country's return, with previous obstacles removed. The NPO will now directly manage the selection of the artist and song, as well as the delegation's operations. This is a structural change from previous years, as the broadcaster AvroTros, which had managed these aspects, announced it would also boycott Eurovision 2027.

AvroTros cited the "severe humanitarian suffering in Gaza and the ongoing violation of press freedom" as reasons for its boycott, stating the event has "lost its neutral character." The NPO, however, stated it held discussions with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and reached understandings to return to the event's original purpose of uniting European countries, established after World War II.

The Netherlands was not the only country to boycott last year's competition after the EBU refused to disqualify Israel. Slovenia, Spain, Iceland, and Ireland also withdrew. Ireland has confirmed it will continue its boycott, while Spanish broadcaster RTVE is considering a similar move. The artist and song representing the Netherlands in 2027 will be revealed at a later date. The Eurovision 2027 contest is scheduled for May 11, 13, and 15.
