Eurovision Boycott Against Israel Crumbles as Key Nations Return

The unified front of European countries attempting to boycott the Eurovision Song Contest over Israel's participation is beginning to disintegrate. The Netherlands, which had previously abstained from the 2026 contest in protest, has announced its return for the 2027 competition. This decision was made by the Dutch public broadcaster NPO after consultations with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).

Belgium's public broadcaster VRT has also indicated its intention to participate in 2027. These returns signal that Israel will continue to be a participant in the contest, and the coalition of nations opposing its inclusion has failed to maintain its solidarity. The NPO acknowledged that Israel's participation remains a contentious issue but expressed hope that Eurovision can resume its role as a unifying force amidst global conflicts and political polarization.

Changes implemented by the EBU, including new organizational requirements and measures to enhance voting transparency, reportedly influenced the Netherlands' decision. Last year, the Netherlands, along with Spain, Slovenia, Iceland, and Ireland, boycotted the 2026 contest due to Israel's presence.

Currently, only Ireland has confirmed its intention to maintain its boycott for the upcoming year. Spain, Slovenia, and Iceland have yet to announce their final decisions, leaving the full scope of the 2027 boycott uncertain. However, it is clear that the boycott will not replicate the situation from the previous year.
