Israeli Father Dies in Slovenia While Saving Son From River Fall
An Israeli man, Gil Hillel, 44, from Kibbutz Yizrael, died in Slovenia on Sunday while attempting to rescue his son. The tragedy occurred during a family outing on Yom Kippur.
According to a Facebook post by Hillel's brother, Ben, the family was on a hike when Hillel's seven-year-old son slipped and fell into a river. Gil Hillel immediately jumped in to save his son. During the rescue attempt, he fell to his death.
The son survived the incident and was airlifted to a hospital, where his condition is described as mild. Hillel, who was married with three children, was an engineer at Medtronic. He was remembered by his brother as athletic, funny, smart, and deeply devoted to his family, noting that his willingness to physically help others ultimately led to his death.
Kibbutz Yizrael issued a statement mourning the loss of their "beloved member," calling it a "heavy disaster" for the community.
