Israeli Father Dies Saving Son in Slovenia Fall
An Israeli man, Gil Hillel, 44, from Kibbutz Yizre'el, died in Slovenia while on a family trip after attempting to rescue his son. The incident occurred during a hike along a river canyon when Hillel's seven-year-old son slipped and fell into the water, hitting rocks.
Hillel's brother, Ben, recounted on Facebook that Gil "intentionally tried to save the child, apparently lost his footing and fell into the abyss." The son sustained injuries, including a broken leg, and was airlifted to a hospital, where he is expected to recover. Ben described his brother, who studied agricultural engineering at the Technion and grew up in Mikhmoret, as a devoted father of three who was always ready to physically help his children.
Gil's wife, Rotem, posted their last photo together, expressing her grief and reliance on him. She wrote, "I want your hug, the one I relax in. For twenty years you have been my anchor when the sea is stormy around me, and now what am I supposed to do? I am not even allowing myself to mourn you because there is a 7-year-old child fighting to recover, and soon I will have to tell him that Daddy's hug will not come."
