Thousands Seek Medical Aid During Yom Kippur Fast
Magen David Adom (MDA), Israel's national rescue organization, reported treating 3,322 individuals during the Yom Kippur fast, which concluded Monday evening. Of those requiring medical attention, 2,268 were transported to hospitals for further care. The majority of incidents were related to the fast itself, with 368 people experiencing fainting, dehydration, or general malaise due to fasting.
Recreational activities also led to injuries, as 299 individuals were hurt while cycling, rollerblading, using scooters, or skateboarding. Among these, 9 sustained moderate injuries and 290 had minor ones. MDA also responded to calls related to violence, with 40 people injured across the country. This included one fatality, a man in his 40s with penetrating wounds in Umm al-Fahm, one serious injury to a 33-year-old man from Beersheba, 5 moderate injuries, and 33 minor injuries.
Despite the emergencies, the holiday also saw joyous occasions, with MDA assisting in 155 hospital births during the fast. Five women delivered with the help of MDA teams in various locations, including Bnei Brak, Jerusalem, Hasmonean, Yavne'el, and Ashdod. Additionally, MDA's blood services provided 152 units and components of blood to hospitals nationwide during the period.
