Rabid Fox Exposure Prompts Health Ministry Warning in Samaria
The Israeli Ministry of Health has reported that 16 individuals, including soldiers, were exposed to a fox confirmed to be infected with rabies. The exposure occurred in the Karnei Shomron area and a nearby military base in the Samaria region.
The ministry is urging anyone who was in the affected area between August 31 and September 13, 2026, or whose animals may have had contact with the rabid fox or other stray animals, to seek immediate preventative rabies treatment. Those who were in contact are advised to contact the health bureau in Petah Tikva or their local health office. Outside of working hours and on weekends, individuals should go to a hospital emergency room.
The ministry also reminded the public that anyone bitten or scratched by an animal should immediately wash the wound with soap and running water, disinfect it, and consult a health bureau to determine if post-exposure prophylaxis is necessary.
