Rabid Fox Found Near West Bank Settlement, Military Base

Israel's Ministry of Health announced on Sunday, September 13, 2026, the detection of a fox infected with rabies in the "Karnei Shomron" settlement and a nearby military base. Sixteen individuals who had contact with the animal are now receiving preventative treatment for rabies, and an epidemiological investigation is ongoing.

The ministry is urging anyone who came into contact with the infected fox, or whose animals may have had contact with it or other stray animals in the area between August 31 and September 13, 2026, to immediately contact the health office in Petah Tikva or their local health office for potential preventative treatment. After hours or on weekends, individuals should go to the nearest hospital emergency room.

Parents are asked to inquire with their children about any contact with suspicious animals and to report to the health office if necessary. Pet owners are advised to consult with their local authority's veterinarian to ensure their animals are vaccinated. The ministry also requested that information about this incident be shared with people visiting or vacationing in the area and nearby towns.

The Ministry of Health reiterated its reminder that anyone bitten or scratched by an animal should immediately wash the affected area with soap and running water, disinfect it, and seek medical attention at a health office to determine if rabies treatment is required.
