Rabies Alert Issued After Infected Fox Found Near West Bank Settlement

Israel's Ministry of Health has issued a rabies alert following the discovery of a fox infected with the disease in the settlement of Karnei Shomron and a nearby military base. The announcement was made on September 13, 2026.

Sixteen individuals who were exposed to the infected fox have been referred for preventative rabies treatment. An epidemiological investigation is ongoing to identify anyone else who may have come into contact with the animal or other stray animals in the area between August 31 and September 13, 2026.

Residents and visitors who had contact with the sick fox, any stray animals, or whose pets may have interacted with them during the specified period are urged to contact the Health Bureau in Petah Tikva or their local health office for an assessment of the need for preventative treatment. For urgent matters outside of regular office hours, including evenings and weekends, individuals should go to the nearest hospital emergency room.

Parents are asked to speak with their children about any potential contact with suspicious animals and to seek medical advice if necessary. Pet owners are advised to contact their local veterinarian to ensure their animals are vaccinated against rabies.

The Ministry of Health is requesting that this information be disseminated to visitors in the area and nearby communities. The ministry also reiterated that anyone bitten or scratched by an animal should immediately wash the wound with soap and running water, disinfect it, and seek medical attention to determine if preventative rabies treatment is required.
