Rabid Fox Found Near Karnei Shomron, 16 Exposed Seek Treatment

The Israeli Ministry of Health announced on Sunday that a fox infected with rabies was discovered in the Karnei Shomron settlement and a nearby military base. Sixteen individuals who came into contact with the rabid animal have been referred for preventive treatment against rabies. An epidemiological investigation into the incident is ongoing.

The Ministry of Health is urging anyone who may have had contact with the infected fox, or any other stray animal in the area, between August 31 and September 13, 2026, to urgently contact their local health office in Petah Tikva or their nearest health bureau to assess the need for preventive treatment. Outside of working hours and on weekends, individuals should report to the emergency room of a hospital.

Parents are asked to inquire with their children about any contact with suspicious animals, and pet owners are reminded to ensure their animals' vaccinations are up to date. The Ministry reiterated that anyone bitten or scratched by an animal should immediately wash the wound with soap and running water, disinfect it, and seek medical evaluation at a health bureau to determine if rabies prevention is necessary.
