Rabid Fox Found Near West Bank Settlement, 16 Seek Preventive Treatment

Israel's Ministry of Health issued a public warning on September 13, 2026, after a fox confirmed to be infected with rabies was discovered near the settlement of Karnei Shomaron and a nearby military base. The ministry urged anyone who may have come into contact with the rabid fox or other stray animals in the area since August 31 to seek immediate medical advice.

An epidemiological investigation has been launched to identify all individuals potentially exposed to the infected animal. So far, 16 people have been located and referred for preventive rabies treatment. Health officials stressed that the investigation is ongoing and more exposed individuals or animals may be identified.

The public appeal extends beyond direct contact with the identified fox to include any contact with other stray animals, such as dogs or cats, in the specified area. The relevant period for potential exposure is from August 31 to September 13, 2026.

Individuals who were in the Karnei Shomaron area or near the adjacent base during this period, especially those who had contact with any fox, dog, cat, or other stray animal, are advised not to ignore the potential risk. Pet owners are also asked to check if their animals may have encountered wildlife in the area.

In cases of doubt, the Ministry of Health recommends contacting the health bureau in Petah Tikva or the nearest health office for consultation on preventive treatment. Outside of office hours and on weekends, individuals should go to a hospital emergency room. Rabies is a serious viral disease transmitted through the saliva of infected animals, typically via bites or scratches, but also through other forms of saliva exposure to broken skin or mucous membranes. Prompt medical evaluation and timely preventive treatment can effectively prevent the development of the disease.
