Health Ministry Warns of Rabid Fox Exposure in West Bank Settlement

Israel's Ministry of Health has issued an immediate warning after a fox diagnosed with rabies was identified in the settlement of Karnei Shomron and a nearby base. Sixteen individuals who came into contact with the rabid animal have been referred for preventative rabies treatment, with an epidemiological investigation ongoing.

The ministry is urging anyone who may have had contact with the infected fox, or other stray animals in the area, between August 31 and September 13, 2026, to urgently contact the health bureau in Petah Tikva or their local health office to assess the need for preventative treatment. Outside of working hours and on weekends, individuals should report to a hospital emergency room.

Parents are specifically asked to check with their children about any contact with suspicious animals and to seek immediate medical attention if necessary. Pet owners are advised to contact their local veterinarian to confirm their animals' vaccination status. The ministry also requests that information about the incident be shared with travelers and visitors in the region and surrounding communities.

For anyone bitten or scratched by an animal, the Ministry of Health reiterates the importance of immediately washing the wound with soap and running water, disinfecting the area, and then consulting a health bureau to determine if preventative rabies treatment is required.
