Rabies Alert Issued to Millions After Infected Fox Found in Northern Israel

The Israeli Ministry of Health issued an urgent public warning on September 7, 2026, following the detection of a fox infected with rabies in the community of Ma'ayan Baruch in the Upper Galilee. While an epidemiological investigation is ongoing and no direct human contact has been confirmed yet, health officials are urging maximum public vigilance.

Individuals who may have come into contact with the infected fox, or with any stray animals in the Ma'ayan Baruch area between August 20 and September 3, 2026, are strongly advised to urgently contact the Ministry of Health's Safed office at 04-6994257 or 04-6994200, or their nearest health bureau. This is to assess the need for preventive treatment. Outside of working hours and on weekends, individuals should report directly to a hospital emergency room.

The Ministry is also appealing to parents to check with their children about any contact with suspicious animals. Pet owners are urged to contact their local veterinarian to confirm their animals' vaccination status. The information about this incident should also be disseminated to tourists and visitors in the area.

In the event of a bite or scratch from an animal, the Ministry of Health reminds the public to immediately wash the affected area with soap and running water, disinfect it, and promptly seek medical attention at a health bureau to determine if rabies prevention is necessary.
