Rabies Alert Issued After 11 People Exposed to Infected Dogs

The Israeli Ministry of Health has issued a public warning following the confirmation of two rabies cases in dogs, one in Beit Aryeh and another in Eli. A total of 11 individuals who came into contact with the infected animals have been referred for preventative treatment.

In Beit Aryeh, a medium to large mixed-breed dog, brown with white markings, tested positive for rabies. Nine people exposed to this dog, which frequented the Zayit and Tirosh streets area between August 22 and September 5, 2026, have begun preventative treatment. The Ministry urges anyone who had contact with the dog or whose pets may have interacted with it or stray animals in the area during that period to contact the Ramla district health office urgently.

In Eli, a medium to large Canaan dog, white with brown spots, was diagnosed with rabies. Two people exposed to this dog between September 1 and September 5, 2026, have also been directed to receive preventative treatment. Similar to the Beit Aryeh case, individuals or pet owners with potential exposure are advised to contact the Ramla health office or their local health office, and to go to a hospital emergency room outside of operating hours.

The Ministry is also advising parents to ask their children if they have had contact with suspicious animals and to seek immediate medical attention if exposure is suspected. Pet owners are encouraged to ensure their animals' vaccinations are up to date and to contact their local veterinarian. The information is also being disseminated to travelers and visitors who were in the affected areas.

Rabies is a viral disease affecting the nervous system that is almost always fatal once symptoms appear. However, prompt preventative treatment after exposure can effectively prevent the disease from developing. The Ministry stresses the importance of immediate action, including washing and disinfecting any bite or scratch wounds, and seeking medical evaluation without delay.
