Israeli Health Ministry Issues Urgent Rabies Warning After Infected Fox Spotted in Upper Galilee

The Israeli Ministry of Health has issued an urgent alert following the discovery of a rabid fox roaming in the town of Rosh Pina in the Upper Galilee region. The fox was active in the area between July 2 and July 16, 2026, with the health authorities receiving confirmation of the infected animal on July 20, four days after the potential exposure period ended. Although no direct human contact with the fox has been reported so far, the ministry stresses the critical danger posed by rabies, a fatal disease without timely preventive treatment.

Residents who have had contact with animals in the area during the specified dates, or whose pets may have interacted with stray animals, are urged to immediately contact the Zefat Health Office. Outside of office hours, individuals should seek emergency care at the nearest hospital. Parents are specifically advised to check with their children about any possible contact with animals and to act promptly if exposure is suspected.

Pet owners in the region are instructed to verify their animals’ vaccination status with the local veterinary authorities. This warning comes amid a recent series of rabies cases in central Israel, including a similar alert two months ago about a rabid dog in Modi'in Illit. The Ministry of Health reiterates that anyone bitten or scratched by an animal should immediately wash the wound with soap and water, disinfect it, and seek medical advice to determine if post-exposure vaccination is necessary. Rabies is almost always fatal without timely vaccination, making prompt action essential.

Authorities also call on the public to share this information with visitors and residents in nearby communities to raise awareness and prevent further exposure.
