Israeli Health Ministry Issues Urgent Rabies Warning After Infected Fox Spotted in Rosh Pina

The Israeli Ministry of Health has issued an urgent alert following the detection of a rabid fox roaming in the northern town of Rosh Pina in the Upper Galilee. The fox was active in the area between July 2 and July 16, 2026, and the ministry received confirmation of the infection on July 20, four days after the potential exposure period ended. Authorities have not identified any direct human contact with the infected animal so far.

Residents, especially parents, are urged to check if their children or pets have come into contact with any stray animals in the area during the specified dates. Anyone who has had such contact is instructed to immediately visit the Health Office in Safed or, if closed, the nearest hospital emergency room for evaluation and possible preventive treatment. Pet owners are also advised to verify their animals' vaccination status with local veterinarians.

Rabies is a fatal disease if untreated, and the ministry stresses the critical importance of prompt medical intervention following any animal bite or scratch. The alert follows recent rabies cases in central Israel, including a rabid dog found in Modiin Illit two months ago. The ministry also calls on the public to spread awareness among visitors and residents in nearby communities to prevent further exposure.

Key preventive measures include immediate washing of wounds with soap and water, disinfection, and seeking medical care for potential post-exposure prophylaxis. The ministry emphasizes that timely vaccination is the only effective way to prevent death from rabies.
