Rabid Weasel Found Near Ayelet Hashahar in Upper Galilee, One Person Exposed

The Israeli Ministry of Health issued an urgent alert on July 21, 2026, after a weasel infected with rabies was discovered in orchards near the settlement of Ayelet Hashahar in the Upper Galilee. The infected animal was present in the area from July 2 to July 16. One person who came into contact with the rabid weasel has already been referred for preventive treatment against the deadly disease.

The Ministry called on anyone who was in the vicinity during that period and had contact with wild or domestic animals potentially exposed to rabies to urgently contact the Safed Health Office. After regular working hours and on weekends, people are advised to visit hospital emergency rooms. Rabies is incurable and almost always fatal without timely preventive treatment.

This is the third rabies alert in northern Israel in recent months, following cases involving a rabid fox near Rosh Pina and a rabid dog roaming Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. The Ministry emphasized the importance of parents checking with their children about any contact with animals, as children often approach stray animals without informing adults. Pet owners are urged to verify their animals’ vaccination status with their veterinarians.

The Ministry also reminded the public to immediately wash and disinfect any bite or scratch wounds and seek medical advice to determine if preventive treatment is necessary. Authorities continue to monitor the spread of rabies in the region and urge vigilance and reporting of any contact with stray animals.
