Former Comrades in Arms to Become Political Rivals in Knesset Race
A joint photograph of Elisha Medan and Yoaz Hendel, who served together in reserve duty during the Gaza war, has taken on new political significance. Medan, a decorated combatant who was severely wounded and lost both legs during an operation in Beit Hanoun, has been placed in the 11th spot on the Likud party's list for the upcoming 26th Knesset elections. Hendel, a former minister and Knesset member, is now leading his own party alongside Professor Yaron Zelekha and is also running in the elections.
The two men, who were comrades in arms and fought together in Gaza, are now set to find themselves on opposing sides of the political spectrum. Medan is making his political debut after being personally slotted into the Likud list by party chairman and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Hendel and Zelekha recently submitted their party's list for the elections.
Medan's injury occurred during an operational activity where four of his comrades were killed. Following his severe injuries, he underwent a lengthy rehabilitation process and has since become a public figure, even lighting a torch at the 77th Independence Day ceremony symbolizing healing and rehabilitation.
