UK Poised to Ban Trade With Israeli Settlements

The United Kingdom is reportedly preparing to announce new measures targeting Israeli settlements in the West Bank, including a ban on their products. The announcement is expected Tuesday in the British Parliament, according to the Jerusalem Post, citing multiple sources. Targeted sanctions against specific British institutions and individuals are also reportedly under consideration.

The British Foreign Office declined to comment on the reports to the Israeli newspaper. In August, British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband had indicated that a comprehensive review of the UK's policy on the West Bank would lead to a set of measures.

Several British Jewish organizations have voiced concerns. Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis stated that such sanctions would be counterproductive and could lead to a de facto boycott of Israel. He also warned of potential negative impacts on thousands of Palestinian workers employed by Israeli firms.

UK Lawyers for Israel asserts that a broad ban might violate World Trade Organization rules and existing agreements between London and Israel. The Jerusalem Post suggests the measures could be announced shortly before Rosh Hashanah, amid ongoing tensions between the British and Israeli governments.
