UK Poised to Ban Trade With Israeli Settlements, NYT Reports
The United Kingdom may announce significant economic measures against Israeli settlements in Judea and Samaria as early as Tuesday, September 8, according to The New York Times. Citing seven officials familiar with the government's plans, the report states that these measures would include a ban on importing goods produced in the settlements into the UK.
Three sources told the Times that the sanctions could also target companies involved in settlement construction. The NYT notes that these new measures would be considerably broader than previous British sanctions, which had been imposed on individual settlers and two far-right Israeli ministers.
Former UK Minister for the Middle East, Tariq Ahmad, told the publication that the government is shifting from sanctions against individuals to measures targeting the broader settlement system. However, the NYT estimates that a ban on settlement goods is unlikely to significantly impact the overall trade volume between Israel and the UK, which stands at approximately $8 billion annually.
