Hezbollah Drone Attack Prompts Israeli Retaliation in Southern Lebanon

Hezbollah launched two explosive-laden drones towards Israeli forces operating in southern Lebanon on Sunday morning. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that soldiers fired at one of the drones, successfully downing it, and confirmed no Israeli casualties. In response to the drone attack, the IDF conducted retaliatory strikes in southern Lebanon. Lebanese reports, cited by Hezbollah-affiliated Al-Manar channel, indicated that the Israeli Air Force targeted the village of Arab Salim in the Nabatieh region.

The IDF spokesperson condemned Hezbollah's actions as a "blatant violation" and stated that the military "will operate forcefully against the repeated attempts by the terrorist organization Hezbollah to harm our forces." This incident follows recent IDF operations in southern Lebanon, including actions on the Ali al-Thahir ridge just days prior, where the military reported clearing the area of Hezbollah operatives and dismantling terror infrastructure. The IDF had also previously targeted Hezbollah infrastructure in the Nabatieh area in response to explosive drone launches.

The escalation occurs amid reports that Iran had warned the United States of a full-scale response if Israel were to launch a major offensive in southern Lebanon. Reuters reported, citing three sources briefed on the Iranian message, that over a dozen members of Iran's Revolutionary Guard are entrenched in the Ali al-Thahir ridge area, suggesting direct Iranian involvement in the ground fighting.
