Second Israeli Missing After Nepal Floods, Fears Grow for Another

Israel's Foreign Ministry has confirmed that another Israeli citizen is missing following severe floods in Nepal. The woman, identified as Katerina (Katya) Sakovitz, 41, has been out of contact since August 26th in the region of La Bahal. Her sister is reportedly traveling to Nepal to join the search efforts.

Sakovitz went missing after a powerful current hit the Rasuwagadhi-Jirong border crossing. The Israeli consulate in Kathmandu and the Ministry's Desk for Israelis in Distress Abroad are in constant contact with her family and coordinating with local authorities to locate her.

Concerns are also mounting for a second Israeli man, in his 60s, who remains unaccounted for in the disaster zone. The floods, which struck Nepal and the border region with Tibet, are considered one of the region's worst natural disasters in recent years.

The catastrophic event, believed to have been triggered by a glacier collapse in the Himalayas, has resulted in massive flows of water, mud, and debris. The floods have destroyed entire villages, devastated infrastructure, and cut off vast areas from power and communication. Official figures report over 900 deaths and nearly 4,800 missing people across Nepal and Tibet, including locals, security personnel, and 592 foreigners. Rescue teams continue to operate in the affected areas, with a particular focus on locating workers trapped in tunnels.
