Second Israeli Missing in Nepal Floods; Death Toll Rises
Six days after devastating floods hit Nepal, a second Israeli citizen has been confirmed missing. Katerina (Katya) Skovitz, a 41-year-old dual Israeli-Belarusian citizen, lost contact with her group following the disaster. The Israeli Foreign Ministry is in contact with her family and working with local authorities to locate her.
The number of Israelis missing in Nepal now stands at two. The other missing Israeli was part of a group of 77 foreign travelers returning from a Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage. Their group leader spoke with contacts about ten minutes before the flood struck the area near the Nepal-Tibet border, after which all communication was lost.
Meanwhile, the scale of the disaster in Nepal continues to unfold. Official figures report that 903 people have died and 4,247 remain missing. The floods have caused widespread destruction in a remote mountainous region, a key route for trekkers and pilgrims, damaging roads, bridges, and infrastructure.
Search and rescue operations are ongoing, involving thousands of military and police personnel. Helicopters are being used in inaccessible mountainous areas to find and rescue victims and deliver supplies.
