Second Israeli Missing After Nepal Floods, Foreign Ministry Confirms
Six days after devastating floods hit Nepal, Israel's Foreign Ministry confirmed on Monday that a second Israeli citizen is missing. Katerina (Katya) Skovitz, a 41-year-old dual Israeli-Belarusian citizen, has been out of contact since the disaster struck.
The ministry's consulate in Kathmandu and its desk for Israelis in distress abroad are in contact with Skovitz's family and are working with local authorities to locate her.
An additional Israeli national remains unaccounted for in the border region between Nepal and Tibet. This individual was part of a group of 77 foreign travelers returning from a pilgrimage to Kailash Mansarovar. Contact with the group was lost shortly after the floodwaters hit the area, approximately ten minutes after their liaison last spoke with them.
The floods have caused widespread destruction in the mountainous region, a popular route for trekkers and pilgrims. According to updated figures from Nepalese authorities, the death toll has risen to 903, with 4,247 people still missing. Rescue and recovery efforts are ongoing, utilizing helicopters to reach isolated areas and transport supplies.
