Bnei Sakhnin Players Attacked by Maccabi Netanya Fans After Premier League Match

Following a goalless draw between Maccabi Netanya and Bnei Sakhnin in the Israeli Premier League opener on Monday evening, Bnei Sakhnin players reported attacks by Maccabi Netanya supporters. Around an hour after the match ended, midfielder Iyad Abu Abid, who entered as a substitute in the 84th minute, shared on social media that he was assaulted near his car by a group of Netanya fans. Abu Abid, 31, who returned to Sakhnin this summer and began his senior career at Maccabi Netanya in 2014, described the incident as "disgusting behavior" and expressed frustration about the need for police protection to feel safe.

Midfielder Ilay Hajaj also reported being attacked after the game and filed a police complaint. Hajaj recounted that while driving home with his pregnant wife, their car was damaged by the attackers, who struck the door where his wife was seated. He emphasized the danger of the situation and questioned the state of football safety.

Bnei Sakhnin club issued a statement expressing deep concern over the serious incidents occurring just meters from the stadium. The club confirmed that both Abu Abid's and Hajaj's vehicles were attacked, as well as a car carrying Bnei Sakhnin fans, including a medical student. The club called on the Israeli police and relevant authorities to thoroughly investigate, identify those responsible, and ensure accountability. The players involved were summoned to the police station the following day to provide testimony and clarify the circumstances.

The incidents highlight ongoing tensions and the risks of violence surrounding football matches in Israel, with the club condemning all forms of violence inside and outside stadiums.
