Former Israeli Politician Shelly Yachimovich Reveals Pancreatic Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment

Shelly Yachimovich, former chairwoman of Israel's Labor Party and current journalist, disclosed on Sunday that she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer eight months ago. She revealed in a personal social media post that the tumor was detected early without metastases, allowing for immediate surgery. Since then, three CT scans have shown no recurrence of the tumor or signs of the disease returning.

Despite the encouraging medical results, Yachimovich is undergoing intensive chemotherapy every two weeks due to the aggressive nature of pancreatic cancer. She described her emotional state as challenging but without despair or fear, emphasizing her refusal to adopt a victim mentality. She also reflected on the ongoing Israeli security situation, mourning the many young lives lost since October 7, 2023.

Yachimovich continues to function almost normally, engaging in activities like cycling and socializing, though with moderation due to chemotherapy's weakening effects. She expressed deep trust in modern medicine and praised the medical teams at Ichilov Hospital and the Ben Yehuda Clinic for their dedication despite overwhelming workloads.

The 66-year-old politician served in the Knesset from 2006 to 2017 and led the Labor Party from 2011 to 2013, advocating for social-economic policies supporting vulnerable populations. Since leaving politics, she has worked as a political commentator for Kan Reshet Bet. Her post included a photo of her during chemotherapy alongside her partner of six years, Oved.

Yachimovich concluded with a balanced outlook, committed to doing everything necessary to recover while preparing pragmatically for less optimistic scenarios.
