Two Israeli Reservists Killed in South Lebanon Blast During Anti-Terror Operation

Two Israeli reservists, Lieutenant Colonel (res.) Harel Birnstok, 34, from Nokdim, and Major (res.) Tamir Vaknin, 33, from Eilat, were killed in a serious incident in southern Lebanon on Wednesday around noon. Both served in Battalion 2855 of the 55th "Spearhead" Brigade. The incident occurred during a clearance operation in the village of Majdal Zun, aimed at destroying terrorist infrastructure. As the force entered a building, an explosion, likely from an improvised explosive device, detonated, killing Birnstok and Vaknin and severely injuring four other reservist soldiers who were evacuated for medical treatment. Families were notified immediately.

Following the explosion, the Israeli Air Force and artillery units struck targets in the area. The IDF stated it is unclear when the explosive device was planted and whether it was recent. The military accused the terrorist organization of violating the ceasefire. This attack coincided with ongoing Israel-Lebanon talks in Rome.

Local leaders mourned the fallen soldiers. Eli Lankri, mayor of Eilat, expressed deep sorrow over Vaknin's death, calling him one of the city's finest sons and extending condolences to his family. Residents of Neve Daniel paid tribute to Birnstok, describing him as a beloved commander who died defending the nation. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz offered heartfelt condolences to the families and wished a full recovery to the wounded soldiers, emphasizing the dedication and sacrifice of the fallen reservists for Israel's security.
