Two Israeli Reservists Killed in Bomb Blast During Operation in South Lebanon

Two Israeli Defense Forces reservists, Captain (Res.) Harel Birnstok, 34, from Nokdim, and Sergeant Major (Res.) Tamir Vaknin, 33, from Eilat, were killed in a bomb explosion in the village of Majdal Zun in southern Lebanon. The incident occurred during a clearance operation aimed at destroying terrorist infrastructure in the area. Four additional reservist soldiers were seriously injured and evacuated for medical treatment.

According to an initial IDF investigation, the explosion happened around noon when the force entered a building where an improvised explosive device was planted. The attack took place amid escalating tensions along Israel's northern border, following a breach of the ceasefire by Hezbollah. In response, the IDF launched targeted strikes on weapons depots and infrastructure near the village of Al-Mansouri after issuing evacuation warnings to civilians.

These military actions coincided with ongoing talks between Israel and Lebanon in Rome, addressing ceasefire enforcement, pilot zones, tunnel demolitions, and destruction of villages in southern Lebanon. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu cut short a family ceremony to oversee the evolving military and diplomatic situation. The political leadership had restrained the military from launching a broader offensive, reportedly due to concerns about U.S. criticism.

The deaths of Birnstok and Vaknin mark a significant escalation in the volatile northern front, highlighting the risks faced by Israeli forces conducting counterterrorism operations in Lebanon.
