Israel Mourns Two Reserve Officers Killed in South Lebanon Clash

Israel is mourning the deaths of two reserve officers, Major Harel Birnstock and Captain Tamir Vaknin, who were killed during an operational activity in southern Lebanon. The incident occurred early in the morning when their unit, Battalion 2855 of the Nahal Brigade, encountered a booby-trapped house planted by Hezbollah, resulting in a blast that also severely injured four other soldiers. Three of the wounded are in serious condition, and one is in critical condition.

Major Harel Birnstock, 34, from Nokdim, served as a company commander and left behind a wife and children after completing hundreds of reserve duty days. Captain Tamir Vaknin, 33, was a native of Eilat and a graduate of Rabin High School, coming from a longstanding local family. Their deaths have deeply affected their communities and the entire defense establishment.

Defense Minister Israel Katz expressed sorrow on behalf of the defense system, praising the officers for their dedication and sacrifice for the security of Israel and its northern residents. Eilat Mayor Eli Lankri also conveyed his condolences to Vaknin's family, describing the loss as a heavy blow to the city and its people.

The Israel Defense Forces have informed the soldiers' families and stated that senior political officials are currently discussing the approval of a significant military response. The attack was attributed to the Hezbollah terrorist organization, which planted the explosive device inside the house.

This tragic event highlights the ongoing security challenges Israel faces along its northern border and the sacrifices made by reserve soldiers in protecting the country.
