Israeli Reservists Harel Birnstok and Tamir Vaknin Killed in Southern Lebanon Explosion

Lieutenant Colonel Harel Birnstok, 34, from Nokdim, and Major Tamir Vaknin, 33, from Eilat, were killed on August 5 in a roadside bomb explosion in southern Lebanon. Four other soldiers were seriously injured in the incident. Birnstok, a father and husband, had completed six reserve duty cycles and was known for his dedication to military service, often prioritizing reserves over work and family in recent years. His close friend Michael Tomer described him as a humble, genuine man and a devoted family man who could always be counted on to show up when needed.

Birnstok's funeral is scheduled for 12:00 at Mount Herzl. Meanwhile, Vaknin's cousin, Tomer Marciano, recalled him as "always first," embodying the spirit of a true warrior who loved life. Although Vaknin recently lived in Tel Aviv, Eilat remained his home. His funeral will take place at 19:00 in Eilat, with the city distributing Israeli flags at the cemetery entrance from 18:00. Eilat's mayor, Eli Lankri, expressed condolences and praised Vaknin as one of the city's finest sons.

The deaths highlight the ongoing risks faced by Israeli forces operating near the Lebanese border. Both men are mourned by their families, friends, and communities, with official ceremonies planned to honor their memory.
