Reserve Captain Harel Birnstok Laid to Rest After Fatal Lebanon Blast

Reserve Captain Harel Birnstok, aged 34, was buried on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem following his death in combat in southern Lebanon. Birnstok and combat medic Reserve Sergeant Major Tamir Vaknin, 33, were killed on Wednesday by an explosive device in the village of Majdal Zun, an area under Israeli Defense Forces control in southern Lebanon. Both men served in the 2855th Battalion of the 55th Paratroopers Brigade. Four other reservists were wounded in the incident.

Birnstok, from Nokdim, is survived by his wife, four children, parents, and siblings. Vaknin, from Eilat, left behind his parents and two brothers. Birnstok's mother emotionally recounted their last meeting just days before his death, describing a spontaneous visit to his grandparents in Kiryat Ata and their shared moments of joy. She expressed disbelief and heartbreak over his passing, recalling his vibrant personality and dedication to his military service.

She highlighted the strong family Birnstok built with his wife, Elia, and their children, noting Elia's support for his military aspirations. Birnstok was remembered as a lively, loving individual who combined great responsibility with a joyful spirit. During the funeral, singer Ilanit performed "To Follow You," with lyrics by Ehud Manor, underscoring the emotional farewell.

The funeral was broadcast live by Channel 7, reflecting the national mourning for the fallen soldiers. The incident underscores ongoing risks faced by Israeli forces in southern Lebanon and the personal sacrifices of reservists defending Israel's borders.
