IDF Officer Harel Birnstok Killed in Southern Lebanon After Devoted Service

Lieutenant Colonel Harel Birnstok, aged 34, was killed in combat in southern Lebanon, leaving behind his wife, children, parents, and siblings. Hours before his death, he exchanged messages with his childhood friend Michael Tomer from Neve Daniel, who invited him to their weekly bike ride. Birnstok replied that he expected to be deployed to Lebanon soon, which was the last message Tomer received from him.

Birnstok and Tomer grew up together and attended high school in Neve Shmuel, maintaining close contact despite their paths diverging. Tomer described Birnstok as a charismatic leader who was highly competitive and demanded much from himself, both in military service and Torah studies. Birnstok studied at the Hesder Yeshiva in Maale Adumim and later joined the IDF, where he became an officer and served primarily in reserve duty since the outbreak of the war.

Throughout the conflict, Birnstok was deeply committed to his military role, participating in house clearances until his death. Professionally, he worked as an engineer at Elbit Systems but prioritized his reserve service and contribution to the Israeli people. Beyond the military, he was active in charitable causes, raising 30,000 shekels and running the New York Marathon to support the Shalva Association.

Tomer emphasized Birnstok's humility, dedication to values, and love for Israel, recalling their frequent camping trips and shared passion for the land. He remembered Birnstok as a devoted family man and a person who quietly embodied his principles without seeking recognition. Birnstok's death marks a significant loss to his family, friends, and the broader community he served with distinction.
