IDF Officer Harel Birenstock Killed in South Lebanon, Remembered for Leadership and Warmth

Reserve Captain Harel Birenstock, 34, commander of a company in the 2855 Battalion, was killed during an operational activity in southern Lebanon. A resident of Nokdim, Birenstock left behind his wife, Elia, and their four children. In civilian life, he worked as an engineer in the defense industry at Elbit Systems. He was a graduate of the Hesder Yeshiva in Maale Adumim, led by Rabbi Chaim Sabato, and is the third alumnus of the yeshiva to fall in the current conflict, following the deaths of Lieutenant Colonel (res.) Yossi Hershkovitz and Staff Sergeant (res.) Israel Sokol, both killed in Gaza.

Rabbi Elchanan Pelhaimer, the educational director of the Hesder Yeshiva in Maale Adumim, eulogized Birenstock, highlighting his rare ability to combine playfulness and a smile with profound inner depth. He described Birenstock as a man deeply rooted in the people of Israel, Torah, and the Land of Israel, who genuinely cared for those around him. Pelhaimer praised his directness, sincerity, and leadership skills, noting that even his critiques were constructive and empowering, always leaving others feeling positive.

The rabbi emphasized Birenstock’s dedication to the security of the state, calling him part of a remarkable generation who carried the responsibility for Israel’s safety with great devotion. Birenstock balanced professional excellence with love for the country and its people, answering the call to duty without hesitation. The yeshiva community expressed its condolences to his wife, children, and family during this difficult time.
