IDF Officer Harel Birnstok Killed in South Lebanon Blast, Laid to Rest on Mount Herzl

Reserve Captain Harel Birnstok, 34, was killed during an operational activity in South Lebanon when an explosive device detonated in a booby-trapped building in the village of Majdal Zun. Alongside him, Reserve Captain Tamir Kanin, 33, also fell in the incident. Both served in the 2855th Battalion of the 55th Paratroopers Brigade. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are investigating the circumstances of the blast, including whether Hezbollah militants planted the device and knew of the troops' presence.

Birnstok was buried on Thursday at the military cemetery on Mount Herzl, attended by family, friends, and hundreds of mourners. His mother tearfully recalled their last meeting days before his death, describing a surprise visit to his grandparents in Kiryat Ata and his calm acceptance of the risks he faced. She quoted him saying, "Mom, in the end, everyone dies. And if you have to die, then at least like this."

His younger sister praised his dedication and achievements, noting his excellence in military courses and leadership roles. His brother spoke of Birnstok's humor, leadership qualities, and deep commitment to the army, calling him the best company commander the IDF could have had. Birnstok left behind his wife, Eliya, and their four children, while Kanin is survived by his parents and two siblings.

Following the explosion, the IDF struck terror infrastructure in the area, targeting weapons caches and operational apartments used by Hezbollah. The attacks were described as a response to a blatant violation by Hezbollah. Birnstok's family and comrades mourn the loss of a beloved soldier and leader who embodied dedication and love for life.
