Thousands Attend Funeral of IDF Officer Harel Birnstok Killed in South Lebanon

Thousands gathered on Thursday at Mount Herzl in Jerusalem to mourn Lieutenant Colonel Harel Birnstok, 34, from Nokdim, who was killed in combat in southern Lebanon. His family delivered heartfelt eulogies, describing him as a beloved commander, devoted father, and a person whose joy for life touched everyone he met.

His widow shared the emotional moment when he left for reserve duty at the outbreak of the war, recalling his words to her: "Be strong." She said she has tried to live up to that charge for their children but admitted, "This time I don't know how to be strong. I need strength sent to me." She urged those present to remember Harel's infectious smile and warm personality that quickly won over everyone.

Harel's mother, Yonat, recounted a recent trip with him to northern Israel just days before his death, describing a peaceful moment before the conflict escalated. She expressed that she had grown accustomed to worry over the years but had trusted this time would be different until tragedy struck. She praised her son as a commander who loved his role and accepted the risks, saying, "In the end, everyone dies, and if you must die, then at least like this."

His father, Shlomo, struggled with the pain of burying his son, recalling the joy of his wedding ten years ago and lamenting the cruel reality of parents burying their children. He concluded by encouraging his family to remain strong, affirming that joy and celebration will always live in their home and that the people of Israel endure.

Lieutenant Colonel Harel Birnstok was killed during operational activity in southern Lebanon, leaving behind his wife, Elia, and their four children.
