Widow of Fallen Israeli Reserve Officer Harel Birnstok Mourns at Jerusalem Funeral

Elia Birnstok, widow of Reserve Major Harel Birnstok, who was killed in a roadside bomb explosion in southern Lebanon, delivered a tearful eulogy at his funeral held at Mount Herzl military cemetery in Jerusalem. Birnstok, 34, from the community of Nokdim, died on Wednesday during a reserve forces operation in the village of Majdal Zun. He left behind his wife, four children, parents, siblings, and close friends. Alongside him, Reserve Captain Tamir Vaknin was also killed, and four other reservists were wounded in the incident.

In her eulogy, Elia recalled how Harel had urged her to be strong during a family moment on Simchat Torah, but admitted she now struggles to find strength and asked for support. His mother, Yonat, described him as her eldest son who built a loving family with Elia and expressed a plea for divine help to cope with the pain. His father, Shlomo, spoke of pride in Harel’s joyful and serious nature and the happiness his family brought them. Harel’s brother, Matan, praised him as a dedicated and dependable person, while his sister Tamar remembered him as a heroic older brother admired by all.

A close friend, Michael, recounted speaking with Harel the morning of the attack, noting Harel’s message that he was entering an operation and that he never received Michael’s follow-up message after the incident. According to the IDF, the explosive device was hidden in an unrecognized building during the reserve soldiers’ activity in the area.

The funeral drew family and comrades who remembered Harel Birnstok as a devoted family man and a committed soldier, mourning the loss of a life cut short during service in Lebanon.
