Widow of Fallen Israeli Commander Harel Birnstok Honors His Legacy as Devoted Leader and Family Man

Elia Birnstok, widow of Lieutenant Colonel (res.) Harel Birnstok who was killed in southern Lebanon, shared an intimate interview with Channel 7 reflecting on her late husband’s life and legacy. She described Harel as a revered commander whom soldiers followed unquestioningly, a devoted father, and a husband who was her source of strength. Despite the ongoing mourning and community support, Elia revealed that the true realization of his loss hits during quiet moments, acknowledging that "he is truly not coming back."

Social media has been flooded with stories and photos portraying Harel as a professional leader and a joyful, loving person. Elia emphasized his unique ability to balance professionalism with warmth, calling every soldier “brother,” knowing their families, and supporting them beyond military duties. At home, he was the life of the party, passionate about hobbies and bringing joy to those around him.

Harel also valued unity and diversity, embracing people from all walks of Israeli society and fostering inclusion both at work in Elbit Systems and in life. Elia recounted how military reserve duty became a constant in their family life during the three years of war, with Harel always prioritizing his soldiers even during family time. Surprisingly, Elia said she felt little fear during his last deployment, as he was nicknamed "Phoenix" by his troops for his resilience. Now, she faces the challenge of raising their four children alone, balancing their pride and grief. She promised to keep smiling for them and to ensure her children grow up knowing who their father was and what he fought for.

Elia struggles to think about formal memorials but insists that Harel and his fallen comrade Tamir Kanin deserve to be remembered as more than just names. She concluded emotionally, stating that while many saw her as his support, he was truly hers, giving her strength and love every day.
